“The Age of Steam Railways is Alive and Well” A wonderful thing about Tasmania is the way they have preserved heritage. Whether it is architecture or machinery, the past is alive and well, helped in many cases by loyal volunteers, as is the case of this railway. They run steam on Sundays and railmotors daily along a track a couple of kilometres long. Your ticket is like the original cardboard one, then you head out in a railmotor with all the sounds and smells of a bygone era. In the grounds are numerous examples of railway rolling stock awaiting restoration all of which you can clamber over..In the original workshops men in overalls are working on steam engines and railmotors. I was impressed by the enthusiasm and authenticity of Don River which is a must for railway buffs or anyone who appreciates heritage.

“More depth than you'd think.” A good collection of locomotives, rolling stock and ephemera with a few kilometres of track for a train ride, steam hauled if you go at the right time. They even have a Royal carriage from the 1920s. Not expensive to visit and the volunteer staff are full of useful information.

“Good for the kids” This is a great place to take the kids. Entry price is fair. The train ride is a real hit with my 4 year olds! And the carriages in the big shed are worth having a good look at. Recommend.

“Hidden secret of Devonport/Don” Though this is in Don, it really is Devonport lol. Must do activity with kids. The old fashioned train is cheap and fun for the whole family, and takes you back in time down to Coles Beach and back again. Allow a couple of hours for the ride and a wonder through the grounds.

“Hidden gem” For the history buff this is a must see! The volunteers do a great job, what a credit to them! It felt like we had taken a step back in time with all the railway paraphernalia. There was so much to see and it was great to be able to look in the workshops.
